Presence
Everybody talks about, posts about, and offers advice on how to be present, all while being on and constantly engaging with the very thing that keeps us from it.
Brahmacharya - Energy Maintenance
Let’s talk about it.
This Yama is a yoga philosophy that invites us to look at and think about how and where we are using our energy and how the use of that energy keeps us in or out of balance - and we are at a point in our society where people use and turn to social media to remedy issues created by their addiction to it.
And to that, I ask: What are you gaining here?
What’s the impact?
Our addiction to screens and virtual connection keeps us bound and separated, and it impacts how we move through life and the world.
It influences who we are and how we think, act, and behave.
So what’s the remedy?
Presence.
Oh, the irony.
But to be truly present and learn to be in our body and regulate our nervous systems means we’d have to disconnect from our devices long enough to notice who and where we are, and what we are seeing, sensing, and feeling in our bodies.
You can’t bypass your way into presence or truth.
Presence must be nurtured.
It must be cultivated.
Presence is a gift to ourselves and others.
Because…
To be present is the best present.
So put down the phone for a while. Step away from the computer. Get away from the screen, and be in your body.
Be in the presence of your own truth.
It’s okay.
It’s okay to sit with things, to be still and wait things out.
It’s okay to be with what is happening right now, at the moment, to be present for this life and this existence, without rushing into the next thing or playing the next role...
It’s okay to just be.
