Desire
I saw a post the other day that said:
“I’m not competing with none of y’all”
And I laughed because it’s true… I’m not.
In fact, I’ll likely be the first to celebrate for, and with you, but it made me sit with and think about competition and comparison.
About why we (the collective) do it.
What’s the driving force behind that?
Sure, social media plays a part, but on a deeper level, it’s really just desire.
And desire comes in many flavors.
Envy is the desire and pursuit of that which we do not have, but that we want, or think we deserve.
And we are triggered by that unmet and often unnamed desire.
And we are shaken by our triggers, but triggers show us where we are not free; where we have been holding and hiding.
So next time you find yourself triggered, jealous, or upset by something or someone I invite you to dig a little deeper.
Sit with it and ask yourself tough questions.
Look your desire in the eye and name it.
Name it.
Because once you name a thing you can tell it what to do; and when you can tell it what to do you can change it.
“Looking our envy in the eye can show us what we really want and haven’t been brave and honest enough to name.” ~ Octavia F. Raheem
Remember to journal about this.
Where have you been hiding and holding, and can you be honest enough with yourself to name it in order to move forward?
